Editorial; Ekiti Polls-2014 VS Edo polls 2012; Why the Progressives lost out
On the behalf of our chairman and publisher, His Excellency Prince Frank Ukonga we the editorial board of the National Peoples News congratulate the governor elect of Ekiti State His Excellency Ayodele Fayose over his victory in the Ekiti state governorship polls. We commend the incumbent governor Kayode Fayemi for conceding defeat in a rear show of sportsmanship and genuine statesmanship desirable of democrats the world over. This is remarkable and laudable. We commend the INEC and president Goodluck Jonathan for conducting a credible, free and fair election,
It is pertinent to note that why the progressives lost out in the Ekiti polls was that they were hunting separately and differently so they had to share the bulk votes of over 350,000 votes of the 550,000 registered voters. The PDP candidate who emerged the winner scored 208,000 votes which is only close to 40% of the total votes to emerge the winner. This implies that if Bamidele of the Labour party, Kayode Fayemi of the APC, and others united together putting their votes in one basket the progressives would have won as in the case of Edo state where all the progressives of Adams Oshiomhole of ACN, Andrew Igwemoh of Labour Pary, Frank Ukonga of SDP, Roland Izebuwa of CPC, Paul Orunwese of NCP teamed up with comrade Adams Oshiomhole to produce a land slide victory.
This is a clear indication that no single progressive party can win elections of governorship magnitude on its own merits in Nigeria, but the collective votes of the progressives can achieve victory for the progressives..
Whence the post election management of such a victory of collective mandate of progressives if they win in coalition should translate to forming a coalition government which was reneged by comrade Adams Oshiomhole in the case of Edo unity of the progressives, he did not form a coalition government of the progressives but rather he abandoned all his allies, Frank Ukonga of SDP, Ize Iyamu of the Grace group, Andrew Igwemoh of Labour party ,Roland Izebuwa of CPC, Paul Orunwesse of NCP, etc and decided to rule alone shortchanging his coalition allies.
This has impacted negatively on the progressives of Nigeria and they now Shawn coming together in polls and disunited the progressives on a national basis. This negative precedence now became the remote causality of the failure of the progressives in the Ekiti polls and in Anambra polls; as they were hunting separately, of course what is the use of hunting together and win for one party among the progressives to hijack the entire victory to the demise of others... so rather than the APC going to court in one of the most free and fair polls in Nigeria, that is on video and camera for all to see, it would be more appropriate if the APC put their House in order by telling comrade Oshiomhole to apologize to all the other progressives and go back to form a coalition government, this would encourage the progressives to cooperate with APC in future polls; Remember it is the same parties that Oshiomhole shortchanged that are also in  Anambra and Ekiti polls…as the saying goes …once bitten twice shy…One cannot eat his Cake and have it…
And perhaps this negative precedence would affect the fortunes of the progressives in future polls of Nigeria. And not until when the progressives learn how to effectively manage coalition joint mandate victories in Nigeria the progressives would continue to lose in all polls of state and National magnitude
