Ahead of 2019 general election the BBC organized a well attended Conference with the theme "Nigeria 2019: Countering Fake News"at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja graced by eminent personalities in Nigeria and from other parts of the World. Among the dignitaries that graced this remarkable conference includes the Vice President of the Nigerian Federation H.E. Osinbajo, Prof. Wole Shoyinka the Alfred Noble Laureate[Panelist], H.E. Prince Frank Ukonga- the National Chairman of DA-Democratic Alternative Party and a presidential hopeful of the party,Prof. Pat Utomi, High Chief Peter Ameh- IPAC Nat Chairman, INEC Chairman ably represented by Mr Festus Okoye [Panelist] -a top Brass of INEC, Jamie Angus- Director BBC World Service Group, Mrs Oluwatosin Ogunseye, Mrs Funke Egbemode- President Nigerian Guild of Editors[Panelist],Mrs Uche Pedro founder of Bella naija [Panelist], Dr Kingsley Moghalu a presidential Candidate, Chief Tope Fasua also a presidential candidate and many other dignitaries and media gurus.
All the Panelists including the Vice President of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and all participants in the conference agreed unanimously on the dangers of peddling fake news and that something should be done to curtail Fake News.
In his Keynote address the Vice President of the Nigerian Federation H.E. Prof Yemi Osinbajo said he was once a victim of fake news and narrated how a fake report about him frolicking with strippers nearly caused a rift between him and his wife. He emphasized the need to criminalize the act of fake News through legislation.
Prof. Wole Shoyinka condemn the acts of Fake News calling those involved in peddling fake News as Sick and Cowards. He said he had been several times been a victim of fake news and their antics.
The INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu ably represented by Chief Festus Okoye said INEC has been several times victims of fake News. He noted a fake news being circulated that INEC has put polling booths in Chard and Niger to allow those in IDP Camps to vote. He said this is fake News.
Speaking to the media at the event H.E. Prince Frank Ukonga- the National Chairman of Democratic Alternative Party DA and also the Presidential Candidate of the great party in the 2019 election lauded the BBC for organizing the symposium saying
"We commend the BBC for organizing this symposium of Countering the menace of Fake News, it is timely as the 2019 general election is just a few weeks yonder. It would impact positively on the process of having a free, fair and credible general election of the Nigerian Federation and would enrich the democratic fortunes of Nigeria and sub Saharan Africa"
